Ampicillin 500 mg is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from aminopenicillin group. Its mechanism of action is anti-bacterial and consists in inhibition of construction of bacteria cell walls sensitive to Ampicillin 500. It is not destroyed in acidic content of stomach, is easily absorbed. Ampicillin 500mg is active toward gram positive microorganisms and also some gram negative ones (salmonella, schigella, proteus, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, formerly called Pfeiffer’s bacillus) and is used for treatment of the diseased provoked by mixed bacteria. Microorganisms producing penicillase are resistible to Ampicillin. This medication is used to treat pneumonia and other infectious diseases of respiratory, urogenital, gastrointestinal systems.
Active substance of antibiotic Ampicillin 500mg or Ampicillin 250 mg (Low Dosage) is obtained as a result of chemical reaction of acylation of 6-aminopenicillanic acid by residue aminophenylacetic acid. This substance is resistant to the acidic environment. The drug is included in pharmacological group of beta-lactam antibiotics.
Indications for use
Ampicillin is used in acute infectious-inflammatory diseases:
- respiratory diseases : pneumonia and / or inflammation of the bronchi (various types of pneumonia), abscesses (ulcers) lungs, sore throat, sinusitis, tonsillitis, etc.;
- an infection of the digestive system and soft tissue (often after surgery);
- diseases of the urinary channel caused by Proteus, Escherichia coli, enterococci, etc. (cystitis, pyelonephritis, pyelitis, etc.);
- infectious diseases of the biliary system (cholangitis, cholecystitis) ;
- as well as gonorrhea, peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal cavity), cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), sepsis (blood infection with purulent inflammation).
Ampicillin is an antibiotic of the widest application. This drug can also be a great help in treatment of pregnant women suffering skin infections (erysipelas, impetigo, dermatitis, etc.), and infections caused by chlamydia.
Before the appointment of the drug every patient should be tested for sensitivity of intestinal microflora to the antibiotic. The drug is administered orally, regardless of the meal. For adults it is recommended to take pills to 0.5 g 4-6 times a day. If necessary, the dose may be increased up to 12 pills per day. For children, a dose is calculated as 100 mg per 1 kg body weight.
The length of treatment depends on the severity of the disease and the efficacy of the drug in a particular situation. Treatment with this drug may last from 5-7 days to 2-3 weeks.
This antibiotic weakens the effect of oral contraceptives and their enterohepatic circulation in the body. It enhances the action of anticoagulants, aminoglycoside antibiotics.
With simultaneous use of ampicillin with allopurinol the likelihood of skin rash increases. Diuretics, probenecid, phenylbutazone, allopurinol can reduce tubular secretion of ampicillin, that in its turn may lead to an increase its concentration in the blood plasma and there is a risk of toxic effects.
Bactericidal antibiotics, including cephalosporins, vancomycin, rifampicin, and others have a synergistic effect, and bacteriostatic (macrolides, chloramphenicol, lincosamides, tetracyclines, sulfonamides) — antagonistic effect.
Ampicillin is to be stored at room temperature, between 68°F and 77°F (20-25°C), in its original container, tightly closed and away from heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. The product must be kept out of the reach of children and pets at all times.
